Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) is Walmart's answer to Amazon FBA: you send inventory to Walmart's warehouses and Walmart stores it, ships it, and handles the returns. For a reseller who already sources for Amazon, it is the lowest-effort way to put the same stock in front of a second marketplace. This guide covers the questions beginners actually ask — whether it is worth it, how it compares with FBA, how to get approved and enrolled, how to prep inventory, and what it costs.

Is Walmart WFS Worth It?

For most resellers already buying wholesale for Amazon, WFS is worth testing, for three reasons:

  • The TwoDay badge is automatic. Items stored in WFS get Walmart's two-day delivery tag and show as "Fulfilled by Walmart", without you meeting a shipping-speed scorecard yourself.
  • Returns are handled for you. Customers can return WFS orders to Walmart's stores (more than 4,600 of them) or by mail, and Walmart deals with them.
  • No setup or monthly fee. You pay per unit fulfilled and per cubic foot stored, plus the normal referral fee on each sale. There is also no minimum number of items to enroll.

Where it is not worth it: slow movers that will sit for months (long-term storage fees climb fast, below), very cheap items (a surcharge applies under $10), and anything Walmart will not store at all — regulated hazardous materials, temperature-controlled goods and certain syringes are prohibited.

WFS vs FBA for Beginners

If you know FBA, you already know most of WFS. The differences that matter to a beginner:

  • Getting in. Anyone can open an Amazon seller account; Walmart reviews every application and expects existing marketplace or eCommerce history (details in the next section). Plan on Amazon first, Walmart second.
  • Barcodes. Walmart wants a GS1 GTIN on every item, and the scannable barcode on the outer packaging must be a GTIN-14 or UPC-12. There is no Walmart equivalent of the FNSKU sticker, and EANs, SKUs and FNSKUs are not accepted as the scannable code.
  • Fees. Both charge a per-unit fulfillment fee by weight plus monthly storage. Compare the two per SKU rather than trusting a general "Walmart is cheaper" claim — the answer changes with weight, price and how long the stock sits.
  • Multichannel. Both can fulfill orders from other sites. Walmart's version (Multichannel Solutions) ships orders from Amazon, eBay, TikTok Shop and others out of your WFS stock.

Can a Small Business Use WFS?

Yes. Walmart's own wording is that any Marketplace seller can use WFS, and there is no minimum inventory to join. The bar is getting onto Walmart Marketplace in the first place. Walmart asks for:

  • A U.S. business tax ID (EIN) — a Social Security number is not accepted — plus supporting business documents.
  • A history of selling on another marketplace or your own eCommerce site.
  • GS1 GTINs for your products.
  • A fulfillment method with returns covered: WFS, or your own U.S. fulfillment.

Sellers based in 14 countries outside the U.S. can also apply, using a W-8BEN-E. Walmart says verification takes anywhere from a few minutes to two business days once the application is complete; a thin or vague application is the usual reason it drags.

The WFS Enrollment Process, Step by Step

  1. Get approved on Walmart Marketplace and finish your Seller Center setup.
  2. Open the WFS tab in Seller Center and complete onboarding: a contact for WFS and a U.S. returns address.
  3. Choose which items go into WFS. Convert existing listings in bulk with the WFS convert template (Catalog > Add items > Upload in bulk), or create new items as WFS items from the start. Items are enrolled one by one, so you can start with a handful.
  4. Create a shipping plan (Shipping Plans > Create plan). Pick small parcel, LTL or full truckload, and either your own carrier or Walmart's Preferred Carrier program.
  5. Prep, label and ship to the fulfillment center Walmart assigns — the rules are below.

WFS Inventory Prep Requirements

Prep is where first shipments go wrong. The rules that catch beginners:

  • Every unit needs one scannable barcode (GTIN-14 or UPC-12) on its outer packaging.
  • Poly bags must be at least 1.5 mil thick and sealed. If the bag opening is 5 inches or wider, it needs a printed suffocation warning.
  • Every case needs a WFS receiving label, printed from your shipping plan.
  • Pallets must be 40" × 48" GMA Grade A, no more than 2,100 lb and 72" tall, stretch-wrapped, with a label on all four sides.

Walmart also offers a paid WFS Prep Service if you would rather ship unprepped cases and let them do it.

What WFS Costs

These are Walmart's published rates (schedule effective April 2025). Check the current table in Seller Center before you price a product, because Walmart revises it.

  • Fulfillment fee: one fee per unit, based on the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight, plus 0.25 lb for packaging. For standard items: $3.45 up to 1 lb, $4.95 at 2 lb, $5.45 at 3 lb, rising from there.
  • Surcharges: +$1.00 for items priced under $10, +$0.50 for apparel, +$0.50 for hazmat items Walmart does accept, and oversize surcharges of $3 or $20.
  • Storage: $0.75 per cubic foot per month January to September. October to December adds $1.50 per cubic foot for inventory stored more than 30 days.
  • Long-term storage: $2.25 per cubic foot for units stored 366–450 days, and $7.50 beyond 450 days.
  • Referral fee: charged separately on each sale, by category — the same as selling without WFS.

The practical takeaway: WFS rewards products that sell through within a few months. Send in quantities you expect to sell in 60–90 days, and be most careful with inventory arriving in the fall, when the peak storage surcharge applies.

Picking What to Send First

Don't enroll your whole catalog on day one. Start with five to ten items that already sell well for you elsewhere — recognizable brands with a UPC, light enough to keep the fulfillment fee low, and priced above $10 so the low-price surcharge doesn't eat the margin. Watch sell-through for a few weeks, then widen the list.
